Tyree Washington – Defying Destiny, Inspiring Hope
Tyree Washington, a true testament to the power of resilience and determination, was born and raised in Riverside, California. Initially pursuing a career in football, Tyree’s incredible journey took an unexpected turn when he discovered his extraordinary talent for sprinting and jumping.
Tyree’s hard work and dedication in track and field paid off when he became the 1994 California State Long Jump Champion and emerged as one of the nation’s top 400m runners. After graduating from La Sierra High School with a football scholarship to the University of Oregon, he faced academic and personal challenges that led him to Riverside Community College.
It was there that Tyree’s exceptional athletic abilities caught the attention of Coach Blackman Ihem from San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC). Drawn by the promise of greatness, Tyree agreed to enroll at SBVC, and under Coach Ihem’s guidance, he experienced an incredible transformation. In a remarkable span of nine months, Tyree shattered school and state records, and even broke the Junior College National record with a blistering time of 44.52 in the 400m.
Tyree’s newfound success propelled him to win the US Outdoor Nationals in the 400m and triumph over legendary Michael Johnson in his first international competition in Paris, France. He later clinched a Bronze medal in the 400m at the Outdoor World Championships in Athens, Greece, solidifying his status as a world-class athlete.
Despite a brief stint in football with the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders, Tyree’s return to track was inevitable. Tragedy struck his family in 2000, causing him to miss out on the 2000 Olympic team due to respiratory issues. Undeterred, he made a resounding comeback in 2001, recording the fastest time in the world in the 400m. However, a hamstring injury before the US Outdoor Nationals dashed his hopes of competing in the World Championships.
From 2000 to 2002, Tyree faced numerous trials and tribulations, but his unwavering determination remained unshaken. Taking a break from competition, he ventured into working as a Peace Officer for probation in Riverside County. This experience provided him with a fresh perspective and fueled his desire to make a positive impact on young lives.
Returning to track and field in 2003, Tyree experienced what he considers the pinnacle of his career. Undefeated throughout the year, he became the 400m US Indoor National Champion, 400m Indoor World Champion, 400m US Outdoor National Champion, and 400m Outdoor World Champion. He dominated the sport, ranking number one in the world both indoors and outdoors.
Tyree’s journey continued with remarkable achievements, including becoming the World Athletic Final 400-meter champion in 2005 and winning another Indoor World title in the 4×400 meter relay in 2006. Although a bulging disc prevented him from pursuing professional football in 2007, Tyree’s indomitable spirit led him to the 2008 Olympic Trials, where he eventually realized it was time to
close the chapter on his professional athletic career.
