Colonel Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) is an extraordinary individual who shatters stereotypes and exemplifies unwavering determination. As the first woman pilot on the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, an inductee into both the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame, and even having a Star Trek Federation starship named after her, the USS Malachowski (NCC-1619), Nicole’s accomplishments are truly remarkable.
Nicole’s 21-year career in the United States Air Force exceeded her wildest dreams, but it abruptly came to an end when she was struck by a debilitating tick-borne illness. For almost nine months, she grappled with challenges that hindered her ability to speak or walk. However, with an unyielding spirit, Nicole fought back against overwhelming odds and ultimately prevailed.
Drawing upon her personal journey and professional experiences, Nicole delivers powerful and inspiring messages that encourage audiences to redefine their approach to challenges. She goes beyond conventional notions of resilience and urges individuals to embrace their inner resurgence. Nicole empowers people with three fundamental beliefs: that failure and risk are the stepping stones to achieving greatness, that sometimes yielding is necessary to overcome obstacles, and finally, that the best path in life is one that remains unscripted.
When most high school students focused on acquiring their driver’s licenses, Nicole was logging flight hours. At just sixteen years old, she undertook her first solo flight, igniting a passion that would shape her future. During her high school years, she joined the Civil Air Patrol and participated in Air Force Junior ROTC. Nicole’s professional journey began when she earned her commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1996. Subsequently, she attended Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) at Columbus AFB, MS, marking the onset of her illustrious career as a pilot.
Selected to fly combat aircraft, she proudly joined the first group of women piloting modern fighter aircraft. As a career pilot, Nicole excelled in her roles as an F-15 Flight Commander, Evaluator, Instructor Pilot, and Flight Lead, amassing over 2,300 flight hours across six different Air Force aircraft. During her tenure, she made history as the first woman to fly on any Department of Defense military jet demonstration squadron when she joined the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron as Thunderbird #3. Throughout her career, she also served in three operational F-15 fighter squadrons, flew numerous combat missions totaling 188 hours, and led a fighter formation providing security for Iraq’s democratic elections in 2005—a moment she holds dear among her accomplishments.
Nicole’s impact extends beyond aviation. She was selected as a White House Fellow, serving on the Presidential Transition Support Team (PTST) and assigned to the U.S. General Services Administration. The White House Fellows Foundation and Association recognized her immense contributions by awarding her the prestigious 2019 IMPACT Award for her transformative work in her field and her unwavering commitment to the White House Fellows program. Additionally, she served
