As the former Chairman and CEO of American Seafoods Group, Bernt is renowned for his expertise in operations management, sustainable business practices, and high-stakes negotiation. His transformational leadership made American Seafoods one of North America’s largest seafood companies, achieving annual sales exceeding $500 million.
Bernt began his journey with American Seafoods Group’s predecessor companies in 1991, where he held various executive roles before becoming President and CEO. His strategic vision propelled the organization through a significant reorganization across the U.S., Russia, and South America, resulting in a remarkable increase in annual sales from $90 million to $325 million. His advocacy for the American Fisheries Act of 1998 and the creation of the Pacific Whiting Cooperative Agreement marked pivotal moments in U.S. fisheries management.
In 2000, Bernt partnered with Centre Partners to acquire ASC/RGI’s U.S. assets, forming American Seafoods Group. Under his leadership, the company flourished, boasting a fleet of catcher-processor vessels and production facilities known for high-quality seafood products. He led a management buyout in 2006, continuing to influence the company’s success as CEO until 2007 and remaining on the board thereafter.
